The final show of the Muny season is a genuine corker. It has a great original scriptwriter (William Shakespeare), a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, which is an alliance of titans in any era. "It" is of course West Side Story, a Romeo and Juliet love story set among the street gangs of 1950s New York. Tony, leader of the white Jets, falls for Maria, a Puerto Rican girl whose brother leads the rival Sharks. Tony and Maria's love swirls at the center of inner-city racial tension, leading to deadly results for their extended families. It's a modern classic with songs that are still fresh and surprising. West Side Story is performed at 8:15 p.m. Monday through Sunday (August 5 through 11) at the Muny in Forest Park (314-361-1900 or www.muny.org). Tickets are $12 to $80.
