Andrew Masullo and Cary Smith: Recent Work is a joint exhibition that marks the first appearance by these two painters in St. Louis. Masullo prefers the term "non-objective" painter over "abstract;" his works combine carefully positioned hunks of vivid color in white fields on small canvases. There's a potency to them, a sort of barely-contained explosion caught in the act, that comes from size and shape alone. Smith works on a larger scale (50-inch canvases), but limits himself to delicate gestures that imply quietude. In Pointed Splat #4 the titular splat is a white flowery/asterisk chiseled out of a yellow field; the edge of the canvas is limned by a thin blue line that stretches into red, orange, black, pink and green along one side only. For all its size, there's a subtlety to this that is graceful and restrained. The show opens with reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 12, at Philip Stein Gallery (4735 McPherson Avenue; 314-361-2617 or www.philipsleingallery.com). Andrew Masullo and Cary Smith: Recent Work remains up through Saturday, October 5, and the gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Sept. 12. Continues through Oct. 5, 2013
