For more than a quarter-century Daniel Woodrell has been making the Missouri Ozarks a recognizable literary locale (whether it wants to be or not), with characters such as Confederate guerillas in the American Civil War, families knit together by criminal inclinations and a certain tough-minded, resilient teen-aged girl named Ree Dolly (portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence in the film adaptation of Winter's Bone). Woodrell's latest novel, The Maid's Version, is a fictional explanation of a real catastrophe that remains officially unexplained to this day. Was the West Table, Missouri, dance hall explosion in 1929 an accident, or the cover-up for an affair gone wrong? Hear him read from it tonight at the St. Louis County Library Headquarters (1640 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Frontenac; 314-994-3300 or www.slcl.org). The free event starts at 7 p.m. Books will be available for purchase through Left Bank Books.
