Harold Pinter deals in uncertainties and ambiguities in his plays; nothing is ever quite what it seems, and this is certainly true in The Hothouse. Roote is the director of an unnamed government-run institution, and his problems are piling up. The residents of his building -- they're known only by their numbers -- are agitated by the sudden death of a resident and the surprise pregnancy of another. On top of that, Roote's staff seems determined to paint him as incompetent, even as he orders them to determine who impregnated the resident. It's a strange, shifting landscape inside The Hothouse, and Roote doesn't seem to be navigating it too adroitly. The West End Players' Guild presents The Hothouse at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday (November 1 through 10) at the Union Avenue Christian Church (733 North Union Boulevard; 314-367-0025 or www.westendplayers.org). Tickets are $20.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Nov. 1. Continues through Nov. 10, 2013
