Our region is loaded to the gills with fun and simple diversions that exist right beneath our noses, hidden in plain sight. For instance, when's the last time you went ice skating outdoors? It's approximately only half the fun of ice hockey: no puck, no passing, checking, slap-shooting or scoring. But it's still big fun -- and everyone keeps their pretty, toothy smiles. Forest Park's Steinberg Skating Rink (400 Jefferson Drive; 314-367-7465 or www.steinbergskatingrink.com) is the metro area's premier skate spot and it happens to be the Midwest's largest outdoor skating rink. Generations of St. Louisans, plus countless out-of-towners, have enjoyed the uncomplicated felicity of cutting leisurely figure-eights and ovals on Steinberg's accommodating surface. It's a beautiful winter thing. All-ages admission is only $6 with a $5 skate-rental fee, and the rink is open every day through Thursday, February 27.
Fridays, Saturdays, 10-midnight; Mondays-Thursdays, Sundays, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Starts: Nov. 29. Continues through Feb. 27, 2013
