In Ruth Ozeki's new novel, A Tale for the Time Being, the world is as small and as vast as the distance between two people. Nao is a sixteen-year-old Japanese girl who is bullied at school and has a family that's in danger of falling apart. She seeks refuge in the past, chronicling the life of her great-grandmother in her diary. On the other side of the world is Ruth, a novelist suffering writer's block. She finds a lunch box on the beach one day; inside is a diary. Ruth reads the diary and finds herself captivated by the story of a Zen Buddhist nun written by a teenager in Japan, and wants to find the girl who wrote it. A Tale for the Time Being was shortlisted for the prestigious Man Booker Prize, and is now in paperback. Ozeki is at the Headquarters branch of the St. Louis County Library (1640 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Frontenac; 314-994-3300 or www.slcl.org) at 7 p.m. tonight to discuss her novel and sign copies. Admission is free, and Left Bank Books will have books for sale onsite.
