Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of racial and social equity has in some respects come true; in certain others it still has not. What of the African American middle class, somewhat invisible players in the nation's ongoing negotiation of racial and socioeconomic hurdles? American Promise focuses on this question. The documentary spans thirteen years in the lives of Joe Brewster and Michele Stephenson, a middle-class black couple in Brooklyn, and their son and his best friend. Idris and his close pal Seun cross the East River into tony precincts of Manhattan every day to attend classes at Dalton School, one of America's most prestigious and exclusive private schools. Witness the two boys traverse their complex life paths at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday (January 30 through February 2) as American Promise screens at the Moore Auditorium on the Webster University campus (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Tickets are $4 to $6.
