Caleb DeLeon is a weary Confederate soldier who returns to the family plantation to find it in ruins. Only Simon, a newly minted free man, remains to protect the wreckage -- and to continue his preparations for the Seder. John, also a former house slave, is intermittently present. All three men are Jews, but how could Jews own their fellow Jews in bondage? This is a question that looms larger in some minds than others on this night, which is different than all other nights. Matthew Lopez's The Whipping Man is a whip-smart drama about faith, race and the lies that bind families together and tear them apart. New Jewish Theatre presents The Whipping Man at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 8 p.m. Saturday, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday (January 30 through February 15), and at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 16, at the Wool Studio Theatre at the Jewish Community Center (2 Millstone Campus Drive, Creve Coeur; 314-442-3283 or www.newjewishtheatre.org). Tickets are $35 to $39.
Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays. Starts: Jan. 30. Continues through Feb. 16, 2014
