You get to a certain point in life when fronting -- in others as well as in oneself -- galls. And that's in a relatively "normal" city and region such as our own, where most of us do, to our everlasting credit, tend to keep it real. Not so in Hollywood, the land of 24/7 make-believe and perception-as-reality image fabrication. Douglas Carter Beane's play The Little Dog Laughed takes on this chimerical world in a light, farcical way. It's about a thoroughly lowdown, conniving Hollywood agent, Diane, and her client Mitchell, a star actor commonly perceived as straight; in reality, however, old Mitch doesn't quite line up plumb with the carpenter's level, shall we say. Beane's Tony-nominated play is performed by Stray Dog Theatre at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (February 6 through 22) at Tower Grove Abbey (2336 Tennessee Avenue; 314-865-1995 or www.straydogtheatre.org). Tickets are $18 to $20.
Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: Feb. 6. Continues through Feb. 22, 2014
