Practically a born knitter, Toronto author Stephanie Pearl-McPhee learned the craft at the tender age of four years old. Described as the "Michael Jordan of knitting" by actor Greg Kinnear, Pearl-McPhee founded both the 2006 Knitting Olympics and Knitters Without Borders and has authored several books on knitting. Under her pen name, the Yarn Harlot, Pearl-McPhee has cultivated an almost disciple-like following and has made knitting not only interesting but funny as well. Her newest book, The Amazing Thing about the Way It Goes: Stories of Tidiness, Self-Esteem and Other Things I Gave Up On, is a mirthful collection of observational humor essays. Pearl-McPhee discusses the book, knitting and confounding emails at 7 p.m. tonight at the downtown branch of Left Bank Books (321 North 10th Street; 314-436-3049 or www.left-bank.com). Admission is $20, which not only gets you in a room with Pearl-McPhee, but also a complimentary glass of wine and a copy of the book.
