The LGBT rights movement has come a long way, but the distance left to go is greater than you think -- it's measured in the lives of people such as Matthew Shepard. Shepard was a college student in Laramie, Wyoming, in 1998, who was abducted from a lounge by two men. They drove to a remote area, robbed him, beat him and left Shepard tied to a fence. Shepard died from his injuries five days later. His killers testified that they attacked Shepard because he was gay. The Laramie Project is a drama devised by Tectonic Theatre Project that explores public reaction to the murder. Company members interviewed residents of Laramie and wove those memories with contemporary news reports. The University of Missouri-St. Louis Department of Theatre, Dance and Media Studies presents The Laramie Project at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday (April 10 through 13) at the Touhill Performing Arts Center (One University Boulevard at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org). Tickets are $5 to $10.
