Cinco de Mayo is rapidly raising its profile as a major American holiday, at least in St. Louis. That's due in large part to the efforts of the Cherokee Street community, which seems to improve its cinco celebrations every year. That streak continues in 2014, as Cinco de Mayo Cherokee Street roars into life with old favorites and new additions on Cherokee between Nebraska and Ohio avenues from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today. That new stuff includes Mexico's popular masked wrestling, as South Broadway Athletic Club wrestlers don lucha libre masks and fight it out in title matches throughout the day. Tried-and-true favorites include three music stages featuring performances by Avelina Marquez, Javier Mendoza, Expresion Musical, among many others, and the kaleidoscopic People's Joy Parade at 1:11 p.m. Of course, the opportunity to eat as much Mexican food as humanly possible while engaging in a little day drinking has its own special appeal. Admission is free, but bring money for food and drink. For more information, visit www.cincodemayostl.com.
