Nebuchadnezzar Sings

Do you love international opera but can't get to Europe as often as you'd like? Then the Royal Opera House in London has you covered with its broadcast of Giuseppe Verdi's Nabucco at the Landmark Tivoli Theatre (6350 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-727-7271 or www.landmarktheatres.com) at noon today. Tenor Placido Domingo stars as the biblical king Nabucco (or Nebuchadnezzar, for the non-Italians) in Daniele Abbado's new production, which is set in the latter half of the 20th century. The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and Royal Opera Chorus power up Verdi's score, which tells the story of a king who proclaims himself a god over the Hebrews and his scheming daughter's attempt to steal the throne out from under him. The screening is nearly three hours, but you can recline, munch popcorn and go to the restroom at your leisure. Plus, with the broadcast on the big screen, you can leave your opera glasses and best tuxedo and top hat at home. Tickets for Nabucco are $15.
