After the Laughter

Household names can have relatively short shelf lives. Such is the case with comic David Steinberg, who was quite popular in the 1970s and a fixture especially of the late-night talk shows. For those of us of a certain age, the man is fondly remembered. An extremely bright, witty guy who didn't bother trying to conceal or apologize for his first-class mind, Steinberg was always whip smart, likeable and very funny. Quality Balls -- The David Steinberg Story is a documentary about the son of a Winnipeg rabbi who rose to ubiquity on American television screens before moving behind the camera, and not without a little controversy along the way. It screens today at 2 p.m. as part of the St. Louis Jewish Film Festival at Landmark's Plaza Frontenac Cinema (1701 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Frontenac; 314-442-3179 or www.stljewishfilmfestival.org). Tickets are $8 to $11.
