If you have to get your fireworks fix and you prefer it staged on the banks of a major river, downtown St. Louis can't help you in 2014; that particular big bang (Fair St. Louis) has been relocated to Forest Park this time around. No worries -- Alton, Illinois, steps up this summer to assume the role of our region's sole official Mississippi River holiday-fireworks venue. The Alton Fireworks Over the Mississippi event takes place today along the town's riverfront with the striking Clark Bridge as a backdrop. The show starts at 6 p.m. with music from Tyler Filmore, Leslie Craig and the Hellbenders, and Nashvegas at the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater (1 Riverfront Drive, Alton, Illinois). Gates open at 5 p.m., and tickets for the musical entertainment are $10 to $20. The fireworks show begins at 9:15 p.m.; there is no charge for viewing that.
