For as long as I can remember, General Motors has been offering diesel engines in automobiles, in other parts of the world with a successful take rate among consumers. We are now seeing this type of setup for motorist here in the US with the introduction of the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze front-wheel-drive sedan. The Cruze compact automobile has been very popular since first introduced a couple of years ago when it was developed to replace their dated Cavalier’s and most recent Cobalt models. Designed with many new welcomed features and rolling technologies, Cruze was a far departure from the GM “J-body platform models" it replaced and all at a price point which is quite attractive. With this car positioned in the class of the Ford Focus, Mitsubishi Lancer, Dodge Dart, Nissan Sentra, Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic, it’s important to underscore that the Cruze is the only model in this classification sold coast-to-coast with a fuel sipping, clean burning turbo diesel engine. With this powerplant apparatus being the heart of this unique Cruze edition, the 2.0-liter four cylinder turbo charged engine is rated at 151-horsepower and 264 lb.-ft of quick acceleration torque. With the six speed automatic transmission, the EPA fuel consumption numbers reflect 27-mpg with city driving and some 46-mpg while operating the car on the open highway. Included is a 15.6 gallon fuel tank. That translates to Cruze having an estimated driving range over 700 highway miles. The engine performs quite smoothly and is seamless to the driver when it comes to the harshness issues often associated with older diesel engines many of us were accustom to in years past. It's a remarkable advancement overall, under all driving modes. This state-of-the-art engine produces as much as 90% less particulate tail pipe emissions when compared to previous diesel engines offered in this country. On the other hand, the imported automatic transmission from their Asian supplier shifted quite rough. It would simple rattle your nerves with a “jerky” type shift pattern. I'm quite certain that GM powertrain development engineers at their proving grounds are working on a fix for this issue. All versions of Cruze are manufactured at Lordstown, Ohio assembly facilities. The diesel engines are also imported for this model as they are being produced and shipped in from Germany. Under the heading of safety enhancements, there are ten air bags throughout the car's interior which are standard. Additionally, they also include head curtain side air bags, front and rear side impact air bags as well as front knee air bag components. Electronic stability control is included coupled with a high tech collapsible foot pedal assemblies. They are designed to help protect the driver from leg and foot injuries in the event of a collision. Electronic power steering and an advanced underside rear suspension set-up helps make this car a pleasure to operate. Other than the transmission "hick-ups" during the road test, the ride mannerisms are balanced and unruffled. Breaking is superb and conveys the feeling of sureness to the driver with the four wheel antilock disc brakes. The vehicles interior is nicely done with easy to use controls. Most daily needed functions and operating features are easy to understand and can be self taught in a matter of minutes of settling into the cabin. The front bucket seats are comfortable while rear passenger seating in this five passenger automobile also features notable leg and head room. The trunk space is certainly adequate and quite sufficient for this size car. Under the heading of standard equipment, you'll quickly discover ; large 17-inch tires and wheels, Bluetooth streaming audio, smart phone compatibilities, seven inch center dash touch screen tied in with the radio, leather appointed seating, enhanced Chevrolets MyLink infotainment system, factory included theft deterrent system and vehicle alarm, remote keyless entry, power door locks and windows, front heated seats, air conditioning, XM-radio service, driver info center, vanity mirrors, cruise control, tilt and telescoping steering column with steering wheel controls, acoustic sound proofing, six speaker audio system and voice activated driver input controls. Rear window defroster and variable/intermittent windshield wipers as well as a rear air spoiler are also included with the diesel pricing package. At road test, the 2014 Cruze diesel had a suggested retail price (after the approbate shipping charges were also posted) at $25,695.00. This also included Chevrolet's 5-year/100,000 mile powertrain limited warranty as well as their included two year maintenance plane. Additional information is always online at www.chevy.com.
