The key to understanding the events of the present can often be found contained in little envelopes stored in the basement of the library on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus. The Mercantile Library moved to the university two years ago, after the private institution was purchased by the state. The Mercantile's collection includes the clipping and photo files from the defunct St. Louis Globe-Democrat, which stopped publishing in the mid-1980s. Because of its age, most, if not all, of the information contained in the Globe files is unavailable on the Internet. Mary Ellen Davis, a former Globe employee, has continued to keep the files in order at the library since the newspaper folded. The clips are categorized by name and subject. They are an invaluable source to historians and journalists interested in placing current events in their proper historical context.
