Lee's Restaurant

Located in a shopping plaza in Olivette, the unassuming Lee's Chinese Restaurant is one of St. Louis' best-kept secrets. The cozy restaurant has been there for years and was a favorite of Jack Carney, departed KMOX-AM personality. The food is just as good, if not better, than it was a quarter-century ago. The place features a variety of specialties but is famous for heavenly egg rolls. Whereas most Chinese restaurants offer two, about the size of a roll of quarters, Lee's are the size of an El Burrito Loco burrito (see above), easily large enough to feed two. The restaurant serves a variety of soups, including Lee's soup, a delicious concoction of mushrooms, bamboo shoots, shrimp, beef, crunchy noodles, green onions and other, more mysterious, ingredients. Yes, Lee's offers the standard beef, pork, chicken and seafood dishes, along with vegetarian fare, but the place is a winner because, in addition to the food, the room has a family feel to it -- the owners are known to table-hop and enjoy the conversation. Oh, and for dessert don't forget one more Lee's specialty: the fried ice cream -- covered with chocolate sauce, then flambéed. Phew.
