Ask the steelworkers at Granite City Steel where they're going after work, and they'll tell you, "Straight home." That could be home to the spouse and kids, or it could mean across the street to Straight Home, the bar with the mendacious moniker. Straight Home has been in operation since 1987, run by Janet, who refuses to give her last name. What with the recent turbulence in the steel industry, things have been a bit shaky at the mill across the street. "Chapter 11 scared everybody, but they've settled down and are starting to show a little bit better business, so things are evening out," says Janet. Straight Home is open seven days a week, from 7 a.m.-2 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m.-3 a.m. Friday and Saturday and noon-2 a.m. Sunday. It's a no-frills place with a pool table, chips, pretzels, frozen pizza and package liquor. One worrisome factoid offered up by Janet is that the best-selling beer at this quintessential blue-collar bar is not Stag or Old Style or even Busch. It's Bud Light. Yikes. But maybe the über popularity of a beer with less alcohol and fewer calories is a good thing, whether steelworkers go straight home or Straight Home.
