DeMun Avenue

Readers' Choice: South City Diner
Steak n Shake (tie)
If Renoir lived in St. Louis, here is what he would paint: A decadently textured oil on canvas, the rolling grounds of Concordia Seminary to the left, the scape of DeMun's sidewalk eateries to the right, the dramatic Missouri sky fading to black above. The northern end of DeMun is a block to treasure, simultaneously quaint and cosmopolitan, and perhaps best appreciated while lingering over a little nosh around the witching hour -- which is possible to do at Kaldi's Coffee House & Market Bakery (700 DeMun, 314-727-9955; open until 11 p.m. every day), Jimmy's Café on the Park (706 DeMun, 725-8585; open till midnight on weekends) and Sasha's Wine Bar & Market (706-C DeMun, 314-863-7274; open till 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday and till midnight on Sundays). All three boast a pleasing array of twilight-becoming comestibles: cheese plates, crêpes, bruschetta, quiches, even caviar. A late, relaxing evening here can reaffirm one's reason for living.
