A Streetcar Named Desire
Hothouse Theatre Company

It's been nearly a year since Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire visited the ArtLoft Theatre. But memories of that raw yet evanescent production continue to haunt. Under Marty Stanberry's sensitive direction and charged by Carolyne Hood's uniquely understated interpretation of Blanche DuBois, the Hothouse Theatre Company transformed a familiar American classic into something unpredictable and dangerous. Forget Brando braying out for Stella or Vivien Leigh depending on the kindness of strangers. In its relentless pursuit of the play's soul, this production bypassed the old clichés. The result was a beautifully rendered Streetcar that should have had Tennessee rolling in his grave with gratitude. St. Louis theater doesn't get much better than this.
