The Famous Gerber
Sometimes two wrongs make a right. Sometimes three wrongs do. The latter is the case with the Famous Gerber. Wrong No. 1: Its main ingredient is Provel "cheese." Wrong No. 2: Served on French bread and topped with a melted portion of said "cheese" (the ham hides underneath), it's got this off-putting, uniform whiteness to it. Wrong No. 3: It is served in a sports bar by a woman wearing very revealing, hoping-for-a-job-at-Hooters clothing. So many wrongs, and yet...right on! Whether it's the sprinkle of paprika, the bread's satisfying crust, or -- could it be? -- the provel itself, a bewitching alchemy seemingly befalls DB's kitchen each time the Gerber is ordered. It's a gooey and greasy sandwich, surely, but an eye-rollingly delicious one as well. Finally, a reason for St. Louisans to take pride in Provel.
