Readers' Choice: Subterranean Books
If you don't know much about history but you'd like to, then stop by Dunaway Books and pick up a five-volume set of the papers of Dwight D. Eisenhower. For muckraking types who want to know more about the author who chronicled political corruption and slime in St. Louis back in the day in Tweed Days in St. Louis, there's the two-volume Letters of Lincoln Steffens, which spans 1889 to 1936. The used bookstore that carries lots of history books also has its own history. For several years, Dunaway was located on Delmar. Then Walter Morris purchased the collection, lock, stock and bindings, from owner Pat Dunaway, and the books were loaded onto three tractor-trailers and carted to their new home on South Grand. In November 2002 the new Dunaway was opened, with the original owner still on staff to help customers navigate sections dedicated not only to history but also to fiction, poetry, the sea and ships...even a section called books about books. The store shows off most of its "80,000-ish" titles on the first floor and a second-floor mezzanine level, but the basement is expected be open to used-book browsers later this fall.
