Laumeier Sculpture Park has long been one of the St. Louis art scene's greatest assets, but when Glen Gentele took on the directorship in 2001, he had his work cut out for him. The position was being redefined in the wake of lingering controversy surrounding the treatment of Beverly Pepper's Cromlech Glen, as well as some (ahem) questionable accounting on the part of the park's previous director. With grace and conviction, Gentele got Laumeier back on track. He oversaw the restoration of Pepper's popular earthwork and the installation of Mark di Suvero's exhibition, Dragons in the Sky. Gentele worked on the inauguration of Laumeier's Kranzberg Exhibition Series, which to date has yielded outstanding shows by Soo Sunny Park and Daniel Raedeke. He's even taken on the "second job" of teaching, as the Aronson Endowed Professor at UMSL. On top of all that, he's got a voice for radio and a face for Hollywood -- but we hope he'll stay right here. The park is open every day (except Christmas and New Year's) from 8 a.m. to a half-hour after sunset; admission is free.
