"Want a beer?" If that's not the first thing your butcher asks bright and early Saturday morning when you're brat shopping for the afternoon's barbecue, consider yourself a meathead. Put down your sausage. And get over to G&W Sausage Company, conveniently if randomly located off Kingshighway between Arsenal and Chippewa. Free Busch flows every day the shop's open (Wednesday through Saturday) as it has for, oh, the past 40 years. That's right, this year G&W celebrates its fourth decade in business -- and the continuation of a family tradition that began in Regensburg, Germany. "My grandfather was a butcher there, and we still use old family recipes," says Gerhard Wanninger, who owns G&W along with his cousin Robert Wanninger. The brats come Hungarian-style (with paprika), Grant's Farm-style (marjoram!), or in straight-up flavors like jalapeño and garlic. Summed up in a word? Succulent. And priced to move, at $4.39 a pound.
