Paul Chaney

As the starting quarterback for Saint Louis University High, Paul Chaney deserves praise solely for his gridiron prowess. But for the SLUH senior, football and basketball (he's earned varsity letters in both) serve as mere placeholders for his true passion: track and field. Last year, at the tender age of seventeen, Chaney dedicated his season to his father, Paul Chaney Sr. (who was serving the country in Afghanistan), then reeled off victories in the state's 100- and 200-meter sprints, posting times (10.52 and 21.25 seconds, respectively) few Missouri athletes have ever surpassed. This year Dad's back home to watch his son continue to develop as one of the area's top athletes. In the words of Jim Linhares, Chaney's track coach: "Paul right now is competing on a level well beyond high school -- and he's only getting better."
