OK, so the Trainwreck Saloon has taken on the role of a chain restaurant in recent years, spilling its freight in West Port Plaza and Laclede's Landing with glittery, neon knockoffs of the Rock Hill original. (A neighborhood bar with a Web site?) That said, there's no denying the mid-county watering hole isn't worthy of duplication. With more than a dozen beers on tap, a menu that surpasses conventional bar fare (think bison and ostrich burgers) and a thriving beer garden, the Rock Hill location has been a favorite stopping point for more than 100 years. Talk about neighborhood hangouts -- this tavern precedes the surrounding neighborhood. Operating under several different names throughout its history (it's been the Trainwreck since 1982), the saloon boasts the distinction of being the oldest continually operated bar in St. Louis County, dating back to 1890 -- or roughly 40 years prior to the founding of Rock Hill. Good enough for us.
