Saint-Louis, Senegal

What do you look for in a sister city? You want a city you can hang out with on lazy summer days, a city that understands your self-consciousness about your slumping social status, a city that knows what it's like to have a French colonial background in this crazy, mixed-up, modern world. In short, you want a city like Saint-Louis, Senegal. (Yeah, you caught that, huh? Same first name as us. Pretty sweet. We can share monogrammed sweaters.) Founded in 1659 by the French, the other St. Louis was once the capital of French West Africa; it's still a big-time burg in the area, as it's nestled along the Senegal River and serves as a transportation hub for the agricultural Senegal River Valley. (A word of warning: You may want to branch out into other sources of income before you get much older. Trust us on this.) Humid and hot in the summer, prone to tornadoes in the spring, our Senegalese sister city is also noted for its beautiful colonial architecture and decorative wrought-iron work. And yeah, they have a stand-in for Chicago to make them defensive, too; Dakar is just a quick rail trip away, and it's the capital of Senegal. Our research hasn't determined if Saint-Louis, Senegal, has a baseball team, but if they do, we bet they kick the Dakar team's ass on a regular basis. Hey, Saint-Louis, Senegal -- we like the cut of your jib.
