It's a dilemma, buying kids' clothes: On the one hand, you don't want to spend the college fund on clothes they'll grow out of in a couple of months. On the other hand, the clothes are so darn cute! Consignment shops provide one solution, but they're often hit-or-miss when it comes to selection and quality. Not the Purple Cow. On the day we last visited, we found owner Laura Maurice sitting cross-legged on the floor, scrutinizing each piece of a small mountain of clothes. On the racks we found pleather pants and gorgeous Christmas dresses. We found Kimora Lee Simmons' Baby Phat clothes for, well, babies. But it's the service that distances the Cow from the competition. Take this tale from a fellow shopper: Last time she visited, one of her wee ones had what's delicately referred to as "an accident." Seeing the mom's plight, Maurice grabbed a pair of shorts from a rack, tore off the price tag and gave them to her.
