Though it took several tries for 700 South Broadway to catch on as a music venue, BB's Jazz, Blues and Soups recently celebrated its tenth anniversary at that very address—and so it's easy to imagine that it was always meant to be here. Like the blues, the nineteenth-century brick building that houses BB's is old, funky and full of stories, to the point where it seems to resonate with the music made inside. The joint jumps into the wee hours seven nights a week, thanks to a carefully selected roster of touring and local acts and a racially diverse crowd ranging from twentysomethings to septuagenarians—often including musicians stopping by to jam after their own gigs elsewhere. Other cities may offer shopping-mall versions of the same idea, but St. Louis is fortunate to have a real house of blues.
