Now heading into its eleventh season, Jazz at the Bistro is St. Louis' best jazz club, if not one of the top jazz rooms in the nation, thanks to its simple, straightforward approach to music. The venue books well-known touring jazz musicians and the cream of the local crop and presents them without undue fuss in an attractive room with good sight lines and acoustics. Add a nice grand piano and house sound system—along with a "listening room" policy that discourages extraneous conversation—and the conditions are ideal for artist and audience alike. As the primary performance venue for the not-for-profit Jazz St. Louis organization, the Bistro presents music on a nine-month, fall-to-spring schedule but has added occasional shows during each of the past two summers. Given the consistently high quality of the club's offerings, local jazz fans can only hope the Bistro becomes a year-round operation sooner rather than later.
