Best Public Golf Course - 2006
Annbriar Golf Course
The St. Louis area has no shortage of public golf courses, but Annbriar is the only one where you can tee it up, face a challenge from class-A fairways and fill up with a warm-fuzzy feeling. The course is something of a verdant monument, you see, to the late Ann Nobbe of Waterloo. She dreamed of turning her family's old farm into a golf course; her parents made it happen on Memorial Day of 1993 after her death in a car accident two years prior. Today Annbriar ranks among Golf Digest magazine's top 500 courses, with fees $59 to $69 for eighteen holes, cart included that rank closer to average. At the end of the day it won't be Annbriar's sand traps or the crafty pin placements that will have gotten to you: It's the sweeping peacefulness of the place. In that respect, at least, Annbriar is almost guaranteed to turn even the feistiest duffer into a Zen-like stud.
