Annbriar Golf Course
The St. Louis area has no shortage of public golf courses, but Annbriar is the only one where you can tee it up, face a challenge from class-A fairways and fill up with a warm-fuzzy feeling. The course is something of a verdant monument, you see, to the late Ann Nobbe of Waterloo. She dreamed of turning her family's old farm into a golf course; her parents made it happen on Memorial Day of 1993 after her death in a car accident two years prior. Today Annbriar ranks among Golf Digest magazine's top 500 courses, with fees — $59 to $69 for eighteen holes, cart included — that rank closer to average. At the end of the day it won't be Annbriar's sand traps or the crafty pin placements that will have gotten to you: It's the sweeping peacefulness of the place. In that respect, at least, Annbriar is almost guaranteed to turn even the feistiest duffer into a Zen-like stud.
