Heman Park
Heman Park Pool underwent a major facelift in 2004. Thankfully, you can hardly tell. While other municipalities have turned their public swimming pools into gaudy aquatic theme parks, University City's Heman Park remains the definitive urban oasis. Since 1933 the swimming facility's main attraction has been its huge 23,000-square-foot pool — one of the few places in St. Louis where blacks and whites intermingle in a shared spirit of recreation and relaxation. Almost as inviting as the pool is the shady grove of trees surrounding the swimming hole. New to the pool these days is a small children's slide, sand volleyball pit and inflatable pool toys. Residents with ID card pay $3.50 for a one-day pass ($2.50 for kids and seniors) Memorial Day through Labor Day; nonresidents pay $6.
