The word "expo" makes normal people shudder. It conjures images of ill-fitting suits and poorly scripted sales pitches and endless seminars about capital and insurance. The expo is a nightmare world of drab boredom, a punishment for entering into the business world. And then there's the St. Louis Old School Tattoo Expo. Founded and operated by legendary tattoo artist Lyle Tuttle and his partner Bill DeMichelle, the SLOSTE brings some of the world's best ink slingers to town for three very colorful days at the already very colorful City Museum (701 North 15th Street, St. Louis; www.citymuseum.org or 314-231-2489). Visitors wander through a who's who of the tattoo world, admiring the work of more than 80 established artists and up-and-comers, and even getting new work done if they make an appointment early enough. And let's not forget all the inked skin that's on display during the tattoo contests — you ain't gonna find that at a Red Hat Society Convention (and God help you if you do). The SLOSTE is also a chance for the practitioners of this ancient art to look to the past and honor those who came before them. Each year two new members are inducted into the Tattoo Hall of Fame.
