Big Hump's Green Dress Run

It's the Ides of March, and the thought of running the gauntlet through yet another St. Paddy's Day parade seems rather pathetic — until you notice a case of beer in the fridge and a green dress in the closet. Why not run a few miles, say, drinking the beer and wearing the dress? You proceed to roll into downtown St. Louis on the 17th, and lo! Some 80 or 90 laddies and lassies have had the same idea! In fact, they have a course planned, replete with pub and potty breaks, and pages of jolly hymns to sing! A merry bunch, they explain that they belong to the Big Hump, a local branch of the global Hash House Harriers "drinking club with a running problem." They've been doing their Green Dress Run on St. Patrick's Day here every year since 1999, they say, before hastening to add, "On-on!" ("Let's go!") A few hours later, you've had a real craic and proceed to raise your pint and offer up your best Irish toast: "May those who love us, love us, and for those who don't love us, may God turn their hearts," you proclaim. "And if He cannot turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles, so we may know them by their limping."
