Los Angeles buzz-band Silversun Pickups had a good reason to cancel their November 2006 appearances in St. Louis: Instead of opening for Aussie rockers Wolfmother at Mississippi Nights — or playing its Vintage Vinyl in-store — the quartet was taping an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. But the fuzzed-out rockers made good on their promise to perform at the Loop landmark the next time they rolled through. In fact, the too-short acoustic set SSPU performed in April — before an electric, plugged-in set as the openers for sensitive songwriters Snow Patrol — benefited from the anticipation. There was a crackle in the air, feelings of hope, optimism and pure excitement among the sizable crowd — which ranged in age from enthusiastic high school students to adults who rushed directly from work. Frontman Brian Aubert talked and joked with audience members with unself-conscious glee — after unleashing a few cuss words, he hilariously made a father cover his young son's ears — although his cathartic screams had more of a lasting impact. SSPU singles such as "Lazy Eye" and "Well Thought-Out Twinkles" hit rawer emotional nerves when stripped to their skeletal, acoustic forms — as if they could start a global revolution, one note at a time.
