"We made a lot of really good mistakes this year," says Matt Strauss, the driving force behind White Flag Projects, a nonprofit alternative art space that wrapped up its inaugural season in July. "Next year we're going to take a lot more risks." More risks? What, like showing more artists who've been overlooked by the commercial galleries? Or like throwing more edgy parties along the lines of last year's "Kim Humphries New Year's Eve Hot Tub Party"? More limited-engagement performance-art pieces, perhaps? More artist salons? Strauss always said that he was taking a risk with White Flag: Was our city ready for a nonprofit gallery that concentrated on edgy contemporary art? So far the gamble seems to have paid off, and we see no reason to bet against Strauss in the year to come.
