A tour of "The Trail" with Centenary Cares
Membership at the old Centenary Methodist Church in downtown St. Louis has all but dried up over the past 100 years. Still, the old limestone sanctuary stays busy, providing free meals to hundreds of homeless people each day through its mission service, Centenary Cares. Recently the charity has begun organizing group tours of the well-worn path — known as "The Trail" — that the city's homeless travel each day in search of housing, food and care. With Centenary Cares' outreach director Jo Wright serving as a guide and narrator, the walk cuts a meandering route past the New Life Evangelistic Center, Christ Church Cathedral, the downtown Central Library, the St. Patrick Center and other institutions that serve as lifeblood to the city's homeless. After two hours on the trail, you're certain to come away with a better understanding of the challenges facing the destitute and a newfound appreciation for that roof over your head. Tours cost $10 and include a T-shirt. Proceeds benefit Centenary Cares (1610 Olive Street, St. Louis 63103; 314-421-3136 ext. 105).
