If you're at Upstairs Lounge for one of the monthly FLY events and you see a broadly smiling guy with a trademark flat cap on his head — the kind the chimney sweeps wore in Mary Poppins — that's Scotty Mac. Say hi and bask in the same warmth he deftly packages into the house music he sometimes spins at the helm of FLY events, or as part of his latest venture at Upstairs Lounge, Kinky Disco. Scotty Mac's music will clear up any misconceptions of electronic music as cold or inaccessible; although he experiments with different genres, his sound is characteristically warm, dusky, fluid and human. And Scotty's so devoid of fussy pretension that you might not even realize in casual conversation that he's soundboard royalty. He's been at it more than fifteen years, as long or longer than anyone else in St. Louis. Don't assume that his easy candor translates to a cavalier attitude about music — he spins a darkly inviting, seamless summer sound with the wizened proficiency of a sage.
