St. Louis Microfest

More than a decade ago, the operators of Lift for Life Gym hatched an alchemical combo for the ages: day-drinking + do-gooding. Their brainchild, St. Louis Microfest, a smorgasbord of craft beers from across the nation, takes place annually during the first or second weekend of June in the upper Muny parking lot. In exchange for a modest admission fee, the thirsty masses get to lap at a steady stream of microbrews, including hometown favorites from the Schlafly and O'Fallon breweries. Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Lift for Life Gym (and activity center) at 1415 Cass Avenue, an after-school home away from home for inner-city youths. So beer effectively buys barbells, computer accessories and cooking-class supplies for a crop of eager, earnest kids. What better way to muscle up to a bar and get a warm, fuzzy feeling from the very first sip?
