Comments (0) Best Live Sound Engineer - 2008

Jerry Boschert

The impact of a quality sound system and competent live sound engineer is sometimes underestimated in small and mid-size music clubs. A good ear and knowledge of tendencies of certain frequencies in a room can make the difference between a good show and a mind-blowing, face-melting experience where the kick drum actually kicks, the vocals are crisp and pristine and the band's sound envelops the listener but doesn't induce pain. Jerry Boschert, whose PA is the house system at the Bluebird and who also worked for years as the main front-of-house guru at the Rocket Bar, knows how to do all of these things. It's always a welcome sight to show up at the club and see Boschert behind the board. Because when you see a local band and wonder why it sounded so much better on a particular night than ever before, chances are the sound guys had a lot to do with it.

I've heard Jerry describe himself as very "project-oriented" and it's true. We hung out a bunch in high school and I can tell that, even as a kid, whatever the guy got interested in he went full bore on it and worked harder than everyone else until he was the best at it. That was anything from BMX racing to guitar playing to working his little brother's last nerve. The guy simply refuses to do anything half-ass. I think he got that from his daddy.
