If the folks at Combs Tire and Auto Service weren't so unfailingly pleasant, we'd think their sign was part of a devious ruse to bring in more business. It would go something like this: See funny sign. Slow down to read funny sign. Take eyes off road while laughing. Get rear-ended by fellow motorist who did not see funny sign. Bring car to nearest auto-service shop...heeeey! But like we said, everyone at Combs is too nice for that. And their marquee is a gift to travelers tired of signs for $2.99 Crispy Cheesy Melts. Exploring the dark humor of the auto-repair biz, the sign has suggested: "Brakes shot? Stop here...if you can." It's also wandered into metaphoric territory: "Bad brakes are like hamsters: They squeal when you step on 'em." And, as the cost of fuel rose dizzyingly high this summer, the sign snarked, "Double the value of your car — fill up the tank." Then again, the sign isn't all morbid giggles and au courant suggestions. For weeks after Cookie Thornton's tragic city-hall rampage, the sign said, simply, "Our prayers are with the people of Kirkwood."
