Kevin Butterfield

Readers' Choice: Jonny Kruse

By day Kevin Butterfield pursues his Ph.D. in history at Washington University. By night he revels in another kind of history with his band the Linemen, playing country music that sounds like it was plucked from a transistor radio in 1959. But the Linemen are no novelty throwback act, and Butterfield's high, nuanced tenor voice delivers the goods with the kind of conviction that makes these songs sound ageless. The Linemen's first CD Through Side One overflows with songs of broken hearts and empty whiskey glasses, and Butterfield's well-placed hiccups and flourishes help make the heartbreak palpable.
