The Central West End outpost of Companion Bakery and Café has one of the strongest signals of any café we've patronized (if not the strongest). Now that free wi-fi is widely available, the consideration comes to atmosphere, absence of censorship and signal strength. Geeks love nothing more than to cart their Macs down to the neighborhood coffee shop — even if it is just the Target Starbucks — and show off the smallness of their gear. All the more so in a café whose décor is straight from the pages of Domino magazine. And while other cafés may offer wi-fi, if proprietors go all China and block access to certain sites, what's the point? Companion offers total access to the Web: Go ahead, pull up Fleshbot while seated next to an older couple as they innocently gnaw their bagels and peruse their paper. And signal strength? You can still get full bars' worth two blocks away.
