I went to Mangia with an open mind and an empty belly ready to try the best of 2009 calamari. To my surprise, the calamari was hot, fresh, and filled with a light spice. But there was one element that was not given enough credit in the article that I loved, the tomato sauce served with the calamari. The sauce was so good that I ordered a blt pizza and used it as a dipping sauce. For anyone who loves red sauces as much as I do, I would definitely recommend ordering a small side of it to dip the night away.
Best Calamari St. Louis 2009 - Mangia Italiano
Mmmrfphmmmrfphmmmrfhmmm Oh. Hi. Hold on a sec. Lemme grab a napkin. OK. So, like, we're usually too busy eating the calamari at Mangia Italiano to talk about them and, let's be honest, what higher compliment could we pay? There's no secret. Just a simple — and simply delicious — dish, executed well: tender squid; batter a crisp, golden brown; a spicy tomato sauce. You know why else we don't talk about Mangia's calamari? Because someone else might eat the rest of 'em while we're gabbing. Hey! Dibs on the last one! Mmrfhmmmrfh.
