St. Louis Roadies

OK, so St. Louis only has one homeless soccer team. That's the point! Peter & Paul Community Services started the St. Louis Roadies in the spring of 2008 with modest hopes of attracting enough players to field a squad. The game is played four-on-four; the Roadies, coached by David Flomo and Keith Deisner, began with eight players. After a mere month or so of practice, they traveled to Washington, D.C., for the Homeless USA Cup and came back toting the Fair Play Award for "showing the best in human spirit." What's more, player Oscar Grandberry got named an alternate to the national homeless soccer team. He ended up with playing time at the Homeless World Cup in Melbourne in December 2008. Team USA didn't win there, but Grandberry and many of his fellow St. Louis Roadies got off the streets only months after their squad started. Look out for the athletes practicing weeknights on a parking lot in Soulard.
