Cupcake shops are popping up all over town, and, of course, St. Louis loves its gooey butter cake, but Carolyn Dickens of Carolyn's A Matter of Taste asks, "Is there anything better than apple pie à la mode?" It's a rhetorical question, but the answer is an emphatic no! if we're talking about Carolyn's apple pies. Says Carolyn: "People don't want bizarre craziness. They want a pie like their grandma made." And that's what Carolyn delivers. For the past 25 years, she's been baking ten-inch deep-dish pies with homemade crusts and fresh fruit fillings. You can take your chances and get a slice of whatever pie she's got in the shop that day or order a pie (or two, or ten) to take home. With custom orders, you'll get whatever style you like. Carolyn says that men typically prefer a two-crust or lattice-top pie and women prefer a pie with a crumb top. Who knew there was a gender difference in the pie world? Carolyn has also begun to offer mini pies that are perfect for two people, regardless of gender.
