Beale on Broadway
If you've been on enough first dates, you know how hard it can be to really get to know the person on the other side of the table. Sure, small talk'll yield the requisite info — job, hobbies, favorite recent movie — but you need to see how your date behaves in the wild. So after dinner make a beeline for Beale on Broadway, located just south of Busch Stadium. St. Louis' best little juke joint, Beale serves as home base for many of the city's best jazz and blues players. In that sense, it's also a litmus test for whether Date No. 1 should lead to Date No. 2: If he or she can't hang with the blues, shake it on the dance floor and enjoy a cold frosty one in the club's cozy confines, there's no future in this pursuit. But if your companion can groove to one of Kim Massie's weekly Tuesday- or Thursday-night sets and keep going until last call at 3 a.m., you might just have bagged yourself a keeper.
