Every summer at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, a panel of qualified judges anoints one very special canine the World's Ugliest Dog. This year's winner was Pabst, a boxer mix with a wicked underbite. Despite his unfortunate title, when you look at Pabst's victory photos, you feel an almost insurmountable urge to smooth his bulging brow and scratch behind his perky little ears. That's one great thing about dogs: Even the ugly ones are adorable. Another great thing about dogs: They need to be walked regularly. So if you happen to make a habit of strolling past in the evening and you happen to spy an attractive stranger taking his best friend out for the nightly dog-park pee, odds are you'll see him again very soon. And when you do, you won't have to rack your brain for a good conversational opener. Instead, just walk over to his dog and coo, "Oh, what a handsome fella!" Nobody has to know (yet) that you're really not talking to the dog. The Central West End Dog Park has gone above and beyond its duty as Your Own Best Friend, though, by providing free coffee on Thursday nights from Beans for Hope, which is right across the street. Just think: You can go from Meet Cute to Coffee Date in less than an hour with the assistance of your adorable new furry friend!
