Acero
Despite three successful restaurants — Liluma, the Crossing and Acero — chef Jim Fiala seems to maintain a low profile. For whatever reason, word of his $25 prix fixe dinner at Acero seems to be a secret, too, known only to foodies and acolytes of his mini-fiefdom. It hurts a little (full disclosure) to let the rooster out of the barn, but Fiala deserves it. He offers the set menu nightly, including weekends. The portions for the three courses tend toward generous, if not borderline copious in several cases. The menu changes regularly with the season and the market offerings, but housemade pasta is always a choice and comes highly recommended. Fiala has created a classy but totally unfussy atmosphere at Acero, with the staff and the clientele following in line. For $25 you'd be hard-pressed these days to find equal value and flavor. (God bless Fiala's servers, by the way, for sticking with traditional Italian pronunciations when presenting the specials.)
